Welcome to VU University Medical Center (VUmc) – “Top of the bill in translational human health and life sciences.”

VUmc is a university medical center, closely associated with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Our core objectives are to deliver patient care in close association with scientific research, academic teaching and postgraduate training.

VUmc research focusses on human health and life sciences and is organized into five major themes:

Oncology; Neurosciences; Cardiovascular disease; Movement sciences; Public health, primary care & long-term care.

Reseach in an international context:

Our research is strongly translational: from bench to bedside to society;
We participate in roughly 64 projects funded by the European Commissions Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) with a total funding of approximately EUR 25 million;
In 2013, we were awarded a total of EUR 80.3 million in external research funding;
With 26% success rate in grant applications, we are above the European average;
Between 2008 and 2012. we have published 8,113 international scientific articles. By the end of 2013 these papers were cited 107,683 times;
We produce between 100 to 150 PhD graduates each year.

Our five major research themes have their own research institute:

VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam – research theme Oncology
Amsterdam Neuroscience – research theme Neurosciences;
Institute for Cardiovascular Research – research theme Cardiovascular disease;
MOVE Research Institute Amsterdam – Movement Sciences;
Amsterdam Public Health – Public Health.
