Your challenge

Your challenge is to propel the search and acquisition for new collaborative research with outside parties, especially biotech, diagnostic and pharma companies. With the goal to become the key relationship manager for Cancer Center Amsterdam with a strong focus on Innovation Center ADORE, the new Business Developer will be trained to use a wide range of activities to scout external leads and obtain deep insights into market intelligence. From this market intelligence, external leads are identified and developed into future prospects with the aim to develop durable relationships. This network is continuously engaged to find potential matches between internal research interests and external research needs. Furthermore, the new Business Developer will be an active member of the full IXA team and will contribute to knowledge transfer activities and projects to boost the valorisation strategy of Cancer Center Amsterdam. For this, a detailed understanding of intellectual property (IP), research agreements, patent strategy, (pre-)clinical development strategy and related financial aspects will be required.

In addition, you will;

  • Liaise closely with researchers and staff of Cancer Center Amsterdam and Amsterdam Neuroscience in order to recognize opportunities for external collaborations and/or knowledge transfer;
  • Vice versa, support researchers in setting up collaborations with established partners and negotiating (financial) conditions related to IP;
  • Support the implementation of the valorization policy as defined by the board of Cancer Center Amsterdam, ao by creating awareness and educating researchers on the value of entrepreneurial thinking;
  • Generate visible research funding that adds significantly and sustainably to the externally sourced research budget for ADORE and Cancer Center Amsterdam;
  • Generate indirect benefits for Cancer Center Amsterdam and ADORE, including collaborations to yield new intellectual property, scientific publications, expertise and research capabilities, and potentially financial milestones based upon successful project delivery
  • Work with the full support staff of the research teams and the legal counsels of IXA to draft, negotiate, execute, and manage legal agreements. Being able to identify and solve hurdles in this process is key.
  • Coach and connect researchers and their teams to relevant funding opportunities and grants in order to further develop their inventions in-house and/or through creation of a spin-off company.

Your profile

  • Background in Life Sciences, preferably at PhD level
  • Broad scientific expertise with hands-on experience in pre-clinical cancer research or similar field
  • Two or more years of professional experience in industry setting (R&D and/or business development and/or commercial); an MBA and/or relevant experience in a life science business setting is a plus
  • A sales and objective driven attitude with matching communication skills, commercial experience in a life science company is seen as a plus;
  • Scientific knowledge and eagerness to learn and stay updated regarding cancer research, knowledge of ATMP and/or imaging and/or precision medicine research is a plus;
  • Affinity with setting-up agreements including financial and legal terms;
  • Creative and service-oriented attitude with a proven ability to navigate smoothly between academic groups and companies; an existing network in potential collaborating companies is seen as a plus;
  • Fluency in English and Dutch, both oral as in writing
  • Proven project management skills, experience in setting up consortia is a plus;
  • Compassion for patients suffering from cancer and brain diseases translated into passion for creating collaborations that push scientific research and clinical care forward.

All in all, this position will rely upon an equal mixture of business intuition and strategic insights coupled with an intense drive to generate impact from research. In fact, the ideal candidate would be a PhD-level scientist with MBA skills and a client-oriented attitude.

Your work environment

ADORE stands for Amsterdam Oncology and Neuroscience Research. It stands for a daring, new way of medical scientific research, based on the parallels between oncology and neurology. The ADORE concept has been established by pioneering researchers from Amsterdam UMC, in collaboration with the Free University (VU), and aims to bring together unique knowledge, facilities, and research programs . The Innovation Center ADORE offers companies access to these assets, data and patient cohorts via the IXA Alliance Office Cancer Center Amsterdam (IXA-AO-CCA).

IXA, or Innovation Exchange Amsterdam, operates as a department of Amsterdam UMC and assists researchers in creating value from their knowledge and expertise. The current position requires hands-on experience in commercial or academic pre-clinical cancer research, preferably coupled to a broad insight in (or at least an affinity with) commercial activities in precision medicine and cell- and gene therapies (ATMPs) for oncological or hematological disorders (with additional interest in neuroscience as a plus). The position also requires at least a basic knowledge of clinical trial set-up and the commercial development of marketed drugs, biomarkers, diagnostics and devices.

The Business Developer will work closely together with the colleagues of IXA-AO-CCA. He/she will formally report to the IXA Directors of Amsterdam UMC, under supervision of the board of Cancer Center Amsterdam and in collaboration with the BD team of the Industry Alliance Office of Amsterdam Neuroscience, cq ADORE.

We offer

Salary Scale 11: 3922 tot 5383 euro gross when employed full-time (depending on qualifications and experience).

Starting salary is in scale 11 (as of 1st of August min. 3.922 euro and max. 5.383 euro) for PhD graduates with full-time employment (pending qualifications and/or experience).
We offer a contract for a period of 2 x 12 months (with a go-no go after 12 months) that may be extended to a permanent contract (funding available).
We also offer a set 8.3% end-of-year bonus and 8% holiday pay.
